Corneille (1922-2010)

Born on 3 July 1922 as Guillaume Corneille van Beverloo from Dutch parents in Liège (Belgium).

Lifecycle:

In 1940 Corneille moved to Amsterdam where he studied at the Kunstnijverheidsschool and took a course in drawing and etching at the State Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1948, Corneille founded the 'Dutch Experimental Group' together with Constant, Appel, Rooskens and Wolvecamp. Later that year, this group will represent the Amsterdam branch of the CoBrA group that will be founded in Paris. CoBrA is a painters collective of novice painters from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. As a symbol they use the coiled Cobra snake. The group has only existed for 3 years but is known to such a large audience that even today the CoBrA group still enjoys world fame. Read more at the bottom of the page.
