Can I come and view a work of art?

Of course, viewing a work of art before purchasing it is possible, contact us for an appointment.

We also offer the possibility of trial placement of a work of art for a period of 7 days, so you can experience at your leisure whether the work of art suits you and your interior.

We have various locations to view a work of art.

How does a trial placement work?

For paintings, we can organize a trial placement for a period of 7 days. During this period, you can experience whether the chosen painting suits you and your interior.

We deliver the painting personally and discuss the conditions of the trial placement in advance. If you are not satisfied with the painting, we will pick it up again after the trial placement period.

For trial placement, we are dependent on the approval of the artist; works of art on paper that have not yet been framed are not eligible for trial placement.

Can I have a painting framed?

Our framing shop has many possibilities for framing your painting. Whether it is a painting on canvas or a work of art on paper.

In our framing shop you can also choose a frame that suits your artwork and interior.

For frames with glass to protect your artwork from dirt and light, we use museum glass with a UV protection of 92%!

Contact us if you want to visit our framing shop to choose a frame for your artwork. Our framing shop is located in Westzaan.

Should I have a frame for my painting or not?

Whether or not to use a frame for a painting is a matter of personal taste, the same goes for the type of frame and the colour. We can give you a number of tips that can help you with this choice:

Paintings made on 3D canvas

A 3D canvas is a canvas that is stretched on a stretcher frame of 4 or 4.5 cm thickness. As a result, the side of the painting has a considerable thickness and is often painted along by the artist. A frame is not necessary for these paintings, but there are tray frames available that these 3D canvases fit into.

Paintings with painted edges

If the edges of a painting (normally 2 or 2.5 cm thick) are painted along, this painting does not need a frame, but it is of course possible.

Paintings with an open composition

If a painting has an 'open composition', there is an interaction between the painting and your wall. By 'closing' the artwork with a frame, this is lost. An 'open composition' favours lines and areas of colour that run off the canvas and, as it were, transition to your wall.

Paintings made on paper

We recommend framing paintings made on paper behind glass. Especially for fragile paintings such as screen prints and lithographs and watercolour (watercolour & gouache) paintings. If paintings on paper are made with acrylic paint or oil paint, glass is not necessary.

If you are unsure whether your artwork needs a frame, and whether it fits on your wall, do not hesitate to ask us for advice. We can make a simulation photo of the artwork, with and without frame, on your wall.

How do I hang a painting?

A painting can be hung on your wall in different ways.

There are 2 main ways:

Hanging on a rail

There are different systems available in which an aluminium or steel rail is placed at the top of the wall or on the ceiling. Via these rails you can hang your painting at any height and position on the wall with an 'invisible' nylon thread with a hanging hook. The advantage of this solution is that you only have to drill holes once and the wall is not damaged. Particularly useful when frequently changing paintings or for vulnerable walls that are difficult to repair from drill holes, such as plasterwork.

Hanging on a hook

The simplest method is hanging on a hook, fixed to the wall. For this we recommend drilling a hole in the wall and screwing in a hook at the desired height and location with a 6mm plug.

It is useful to have 2 people work on the location of the painting. One holds the painting in front of the intended location and the other looks at how it looks. For the height of the painting, we normally use 'eye level' for the middle of the painting. For the location of the hanging hook, you should take into account the location of the hanging wire on the back of the painting.

If you are unsure about the location of your painting, do not hesitate to ask us for advice. We can make a simulation photo of the artwork on your wall.

If we personally deliver the painting to you, we will be happy to help you hang your painting.

Do you also have gift vouchers?

Certainly! Giving art is a very nice gift, for a birthday, anniversary or celebration such as a wedding. However, art is very personal so a gift voucher from Modern Dutch Art is an ideal alternative. You can find our gift voucher here.
