Monika Riethmueller – visual artist
“Exploring the expressive powers of colour and movement. Defining my own rules of beauty. Painting to prove I exist.”
A simple distribution of forms, a non-narrative narration or a visual graffiti of leitmotifs – situations, still lives, or animated lives. Bending the rules of reason with doodles, scratches and graffiti, playing with colour and shapes – I am interested in movement versus static forms and the workings of lines and colours. I start with a plan of repetitive forms and use this framework to add to the composition. The paintings are built up in layers with opaque and transparent forms and tell non-figurative pictorial stories.
Educated in Cologne, Germany, graduated at Gerrit Rietveld Academy (university of applied sciences for fine arts and design in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in 1989.
Having worked for various international companies for the past 30 years, I now work as independent artist, dividing my time between studios in The Netherlands, Germany and France.
