Peter van der Werff

Peter van der Werff (1967)

Born in the Netherlands in a small village near Amsterdam, raised to enjoy life and use my creativity in everything I do. Playing music in a band from an early age and attracted to the Graffiti Scene in Amsterdam in the 1980's, I started painting. Using whatever paint, spray, pencils I could find. Only for myself and my family. After a painting was finished I either gave it away, grabbed a new piece of paper or took off the linen from its frame and started all over again. I tried some graffiti in the streets of Amsterdam (alias Red), but preferred painting on canvas, linen or paper. For me it always was and is the challenge and an inner urge to create something new. I still love the process of creating an art work. The constant struggle of not knowing when the painting is finished, never knowing what the end result will look like and to surprise myself over and over again is addictive.

Influences:

As long as I can remember I am interested in art and in particular the creative freedom that comes with it.I saw the work of local heroes in the Graffiti scene and was impressed by the talented artists who created their "illegal" art on the walls in Amsterdam. I visited many museums and was attracted to the work of Dutch abstract painters. The works of Theo Wolvecamp and Eugene Brands are still my favorites. Also Willem de Kooning can be added to my list of favorite artists. Their use of color, lived works of art and in particular their painterly touch is something I love. Even though I do not want to copy anyone, I am sure these artists have influenced my way of painting. Everyone eventually is influenced by the experiences and impressions from their past.
